Chemotherapeutic agents can be highly toxic and cause alopecia, among other adverse reactions. Alopecia may occur suddenly, usually 10 to 21 days after therapy begins. Tell the patient to avoid using scalp tourniquets if disease originates with or metastasizes to the scalp and to keep his head covered to prevent heat loss in the winter and sunburn in the summer. Inform the patient that alopecia may affect the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, and body hair, and that hair will regrow when chemotherapy ends. |
