Anemia due to chemotherapy

Anemia may develop slowly over several courses of chemotherapy and can cause dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath after minimal exertion.
Instruct the patient to rest more frequently, increase his dietary intake of iron-rich foods, and take a multivitamin with iron.
Monitor the patient's hematocrit, hemoglobin level, and red blood cell count. Remember, dehydration from nausea, vomiting, or anorexia may cause false-normal hematocrit readings. Be prepared to administer a blood transfusion to a symptomatic patient. Plan patient teaching to include bone marrow suppression, blood counts, potential sites of infection, and personal hygiene.
