Inserting I.V. lines in elderly patients
|
- Use warm compresses to dilate veins, especially if the patient is cold.
- Use a small gauge to avoid trauma; 24G or 22G should be adequate.
- Use low tourniquet pressure to avoid trauma, especially if the patient is taking an anticoagulant or a corticosteroid.
- Avoid areas where valves are located.
- Maintain tension on the skin during venipuncture. Consider using the one-handed technique. Release the tourniquet as soon as blood return is evident.
- Use minimal tape; removing the tape can easily tear the skin.
- Consider using a protective polymer solution under the tape around the site.
- Use a padded arm board or stretch netting to protect the site.
