Leukopenia due to chemotherapy

Chemotherapeutic agents can be highly toxic and cause an abnormal decrease in white blood cells, usually below 1,000/mm3.
Tell the patient with leukopenia to observe good hygiene, learn signs and symptoms of infection (such as fever, cough, sore throat, and burning sensation on urination), avoid crowds of people with colds or flu during blood count nadir (usually 7 to 14 days after drug administration), learn to take his temperature regularly, and avoid fresh fruit, flowers, or plants.
Watch for blood count nadir, the point of greatest risk. Plan patient teaching to include bone marrow suppression, blood counts, potential sites of infection, and good hygiene. Carry out risk-reduction treatment with colony-stimulating factors.
