Needlestick injuries may be greatly reduced with a needleless system or a recessed needle system. Both devices can be used to give piggyback infusions with a saline or a heparin lock. Prepierced needleless system: The needleless system consists of a blunt-tipped plastic insertion device and a rubber injection port. The port may be part of a special administration set or an adapter for existing administration sets. This rubber injection port has a preestablished slit that can open and reseal immediately. Recessed needle system: You may also use a recessed needle system with a saline or heparin lock. The system has two components--a transparent housing that contains a recessed needle and a diaphragm-covered injection port on the saline or heparin lock that fits into the needle housing. A locking device on the needle housing then clicks over a flange at the base of the port, securing the components as the needle pierces the diaphragm. |
