Several factors can affect the excretion of drugs in geriatric patients. With aging, glomerular filtration and tubular secretion decline. Also, dehydration and cardiovascular and renal disease may impair renal function. Geriatric patients have a smaller renal reserve than younger patients, even if blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels appear normal. Plus, nephrotoxic drugs pose a special risk because they may cause severe nephrotoxicity faster in a geriatric patient. |
