If you feel resistance when you're instilling a drug into a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), aspirate and flush the PICC with sterile normal saline solution. In some cases, drug precipitate causes the blockage; remedy this by instilling another drug to alter the pH and bring the precipitate back into solution. If resistance persists, perform an X-ray if you suspect a kink, or administer thrombolytic therapy if you suspect a clot. |
