NEW WARNING
The Food and Drug Administration is notifying manufacturers of the fluoroquinolone antimicrobial drugs, ciprofloxacin (Cipro), ciprofloxacin extended-release (Cipro XR, Proquin XR), gemifloxacin (Factive), levofloxacin (Levaquin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), norfloxacin (Noroxin), and ofloxacin (Floxin) of the need to add a boxed warning to prescribing information about the increased risk of developing tendinitis and tendon rupture in patients taking these drugs. The risk is further increased in patients older than age 60; in heart, kidney, and lung transplant recipients; and in those receiving corticosteroid therapy. Health care providers should advise patients to stop taking the drug, avoid exercise and use of the affected area, and promptly notify their health care provider if tendon pain, swelling, or inflammation occurs.
