Generic Risperidone Approved

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first generic versions of risperidone, an antipsychotic drug used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychiatric disorders. The generic drugs will be available in various strengths and forms, including an oral solution at 1 mg/ml and oral tablets at 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg, and 4 mg.
Generic risperidone will display the same warnings as the original brand name drug, Risperdal, including a boxed warning that elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis face an increased risk of death if given these drugs in off-label use.
